20 / 20

Looking for a laugh
On a Sunday afternoon
Turn on the tv
In a quiet little room

I tune into
Saturday Night Live
A little comedy sketch show
That found a niche and thrived.

As I watch Weekend Update
Over the past 40 years
I realize yesterday’s problems
Have never disappeared

We’ve been experiencing
Recessions, poverty and war
Since greed and power became
Everything we searched for

From Henry Ford to Dr. King,
From Audrey to Madonna
From Hitler to Saddam
From Reagan to Obama

Though yesterday may
Seem shinier and bright
It is no template for the now
We forget about hindsight

The past has been
Tempered by the cloudiness of memory
Their mistakes too were vast
Look back and you will see

Let us live in the now
And rely on a new way
The system has been broken
It’s time for a new day
